This Picture with an earring inside I created 1986 in South-Africa during a 3 year visit in Africa.

Diese Schmuckbildcollage mit einem Ohrring entstand 1986 in Südafrika während eines mehrjährigen Afrika Aufenthaltes.

The materials of this artwork are 14ct gold, One Diamond, Pearls, Ndebele beads, The inner glas of the light bulb and Ebony. The size of the whole picture is approximately 50cm X 40cm X 16cm.

Die Schmuckbildcollage besteht aus 14ct Gold, Ein Diamant, Zuchtperlen, Ndebele Perlen, Glaskörper der Glühbirne und Ebenholz. Der Bilderrahmen hat eine Größe von ungefähr 50cm X 40cm X 16cm.

The story behind the picture: Being in Africa for several years I had the chance to visit the sowieto teacher choir and they performed a song called "Apollo" Curious about this name I found out that the African people where flabbergasted by the idea that the Americans flew to the moon. In Africa with with usually very few clouds in the sky you can see the moon and the stars very very often. Therefore many Natives stories deal with the stars and the moon. For example they also have a story with "a man on the moon". But they could not imagine how the astronauts find their way in the night when everything was dark. So they made big huge fires for the guys up in the space so that they can see where they have to go. And on this fireplaces they created the song "Apollo". I was fascinated that the most modern HighTech was flying to the moon whilst the Natives of Africa can directly react to this historical event. So I created this idea in a form of a picture. The African bird-mask stands for the idea to fly into space. The light bulb stands for the capsule. The pearls stand for the return into the sea. The ndebele beads again for this African behaviour.

Die Geschichte zum Bild. Bei einem mehrjährigen Afrika-Aufenthalt hatte ich eines Tages die Gelegenheit mir in Johannesburg eine Vorstellung des Soweto-Lehrer Chors anzuhören. Unter vielen Liedern war eines das der Chor-Leiter mit dem Namen Apollo repräsentierte. Ich wurde neugierig und fand heraus das die afrikanischen Ureinwohner fasziniert waren von der Idee das Menschen zum Mond fliegen. In den meisten Afrikanischen Ländern ist der Himmel selten mit Wolken bedeckt. Nachts scheinen oft die Sterne und der Mond. Deshalb gibt es viele Eingeborenen Geschichten mit den Sternen und dem Mond. Es gibt zum Beispiel auch eine Afrikanische Geschichte vom "Mann im Mond". Die Afrikanischen Ureinwohner konnten sich nicht vorstellen wie die Astronauten Nachts Ihren Weg zum Mond finden. Um Ihnen die richtige Weg zu weisen zündeten Sie deshalb riesige Lagerfeuer an. An diesen Lagerfeuern entstand dann das Lied Apollo. Ich selbst war fasziniert von der Idee das daß modernste HighTech zum Mond fliegt und das die einfachsten Menschen in Afrika mit Ihren eigenen Möglichkeiten direkt darauf reagieren können.

Die Glühbirne steht für die Apollo Kapsel. Die Perlen für die Rückkehr im Meer. Die Vogelmaske für den Mondflug. Die Ndebele beads für die Ureinwohner.
